Read about this class:

Amy Boyer Colgan’s journey with essential oils began as a personal fight for her health. After 19 years of struggling with Lyme disease, mold toxicity, chronic pain, and even carbon monoxide poisoning, she found herself trapped in a cycle of medications that provided little relief. Her breakthrough came when a detox specialist introduced her to essential oils and natural healing methods. Since then, she has dedicated herself to studying their benefits and helping others regain health through their use.

What Are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are aromatic liquids extracted from plants, including shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, and seeds. These potent natural compounds are commonly obtained through steam distillation or cold pressing (for citrus oils). Unlike synthetic products, pure essential oils offer complex chemical compositions that support the body’s natural healing processes.

The Importance of Quality

Not all essential oils are created equal. Amy emphasized the importance of using high-quality oils, such as those from Young Living and doTERRA, which ensure purity and potency. Without proper distillation and sourcing, essential oils may lack therapeutic benefits. One key example is lavender, which has powerful healing properties—when pure, it can stop bleeding and support wound healing almost instantly.

How Essential Oils Are Used

There are three primary methods of application:

  1. Topical (English Method): Essential oils are diluted with a carrier oil (such as coconut or olive oil) and applied to the skin for absorption.
  2. Internal (French Method): Some essential oils can be ingested, either in capsules or mixed with food and drinks. Amy’s family integrates essential oils into their diet to support overall well-being.
  3. Aromatic (German Method): Inhalation and diffusion allow essential oils to be absorbed through the respiratory system, providing direct effects on mood and cognitive function.

Essential Oils for Common Health Concerns

Amy shared research-backed recommendations for essential oils that can support various health challenges:

1. Acid Reflux

  • Best Oils: Ginger, lemon, peppermint, wild orange, eucalyptus
  • How to Use: Apply diluted to the stomach or intestines, take in a capsule, or place a drop under the tongue.

2. Inflammation

  • Best Oils: Copaiba, frankincense, black pepper, cinnamon bark, lavender, lemongrass, turmeric (paired with black pepper for better absorption)
  • How to Use: Apply topically to inflamed areas, ingest in a capsule, or diffuse.

3. Depression and Emotional Balance

  • Best Oils: Bergamot, cedarwood, frankincense, lavender, lemon, ylang ylang
  • How to Use: Diffuse for mood enhancement, apply topically, or take internally.

4. Chronic Pain and Muscle Relief

  • Best Oils: Wintergreen, clove, peppermint, rosemary, eucalyptus
  • How to Use: Create a roll-on blend for targeted relief or apply topically with a carrier oil.

5. Allergy Relief

  • Best Oils: Lemon, peppermint, lavender, eucalyptus
  • How to Use: Inhale from cupped hands, apply diluted to the chest, or diffuse.

Safety Considerations

Amy emphasized key precautions:

  • Always use glass containers when mixing essential oils with liquids to prevent chemical leaching.
  • Citrus oils can cause sun sensitivity; avoid direct sunlight for 12–48 hours after application.
  • Essential oils should not be applied directly to the eyes, ears, or sensitive mucous membranes.
  • When using oils for children, dilute them properly and apply to the feet for gentle absorption.

Why Essential Oils Should Be in Every Home

For Amy, essential oils have been life-changing. From healing her own severe health issues to supporting her family’s wellness, she sees them as a vital tool for natural healing. She encourages everyone to explore their benefits, do their research, and experience the transformative power of essential oils firsthand.

Essential oils are more than just pleasant aromas—they are potent natural remedies with the ability to support physical and emotional well-being. By integrating them into daily routines, individuals can take control of their health in a safe and effective way.
